The superb Golden Gallopers, thrills of the helter skelter, the amazing tattooed lady, the wonders of the house of wax and much, much more.
Not a real travelling fair of course but all its excitement, spectacle and atmosphere recreated in music and song at Whitby Folk Week on the 25th of August in a delightfully original show called Waltzers and Wonders.
The nine multi-instrumentalists and singers of The Ram Company bring to magical life the arrival of the fair and erection of the sideshows and attractions.
Then the audience is taken on a rousing, rumbustuous tour of the showground with all its drama and surprises in music and songs until, sadly, the fair packs up and moves on.
The show is the work of Ian Carter, a music teacher, but all the talented musicians in the group have contributed to the lyrics and tunes that come tumbling from the stage to captivate the audience with the dream-like atmosphere of the event.
The idea is to bring back that well of excitement we felt as children when we heard that the fair was coming to town. We never forget that child-like wonder and that is what we have tried to recreate here.
